Aluminum foil is prepared in thin sheets and used in a multitude of applications from everyday household foil to heavy-duty, heat-resistant industrial foil rolls. Aluminum foil is extremely pliable and can be bent or wrapped around objects with ease. Typical finishes are available in pack rolled (one side bright/one side matte), two sides bright and mill finish. Millions of tons of aluminum foil are used throughout the world to protect and package foods, cosmetics and chemical products. Aluminum is a durable and easily used material, making it an ideal option for several industrial applications.
Foil for cigarette and some candy packaging used to be made of tin, and the name tinfoil stuck. But by the time household foil debuted in 1947, most foil was made of aluminum, a lighter, less expensive material.
The difference between foil’s shiny and matte sides is purely aesthetic, caused during production.

It was the original metal used to make foil wrap, but aluminum proved less expensive and more durable, and pushed tin out of the picture. Some people still call aluminum foil "tin foil," but it doesn't have a trace of tin in it.
There is no "better" side. Aluminum foil has a shiny side and a dull side, a result of the manufacturing process in which layers of foil pass through a rolling mill. But one side is not functionally different from the other, unless you're using nonstick foil. (In that case, put food on the treated, or dull, side.) So no matter how you wrap leftovers, bake a potato, or grill veggies in foil, the heat will conduct just the same.
It can help loosen up a block of brown sugar. When your brown sugar turns into a brick in your cupboard, wrap it in aluminum foil and put it in a 300°F oven for five minutes.

Aluminum foils are available in various alloys
Aluminum foil is characterized by its alloy and the material state. Pure aluminum (i.e., 100%) does not exist on the market, but other metals and semimetals are bonded to the aluminum in an alloy. These are mainly chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, titanium and zinc.
These elements are often only added in fractions of one percent, but can strongly influence the properties of the aluminum. For this reason, different alloys are preferred for different applications.
In addition to the alloy, the material temper also has an influence on the properties of the aluminum. A distinction is made here between “soft” and “hard” aluminum, as well as the intermediate forms “quarter hard”, “semi hard” and “three-quarter hard”.
After (several times) rolling operations, the aluminum is in a hard condition. If the rolls are then heated for several hours in an oven, the material is transformed to a soft state.
