Tea brewed with herbs, spices, and essential oils are known as blends. They can be treated differently than straight tea, as the herbs will mask the off flavors from over-steeping. To get the full flavor of the herbs in most blends, steeping longer will yield a more flavorful cup of tea. The art of blending herbs, spices, essential oils, and tea is much like painting a portrait. For a recipe to be enjoyed, there must be balance and complexity, yet the tea should not be masked beyond recognition. We blend our organic herbs and spices in-house with tea and in small batches to ensure freshness and consistency in every can.

The Company
Created in 2016 as an answer to the demand from cafés and restaurants for a high-quality tea source, Red Rooster Coffee Roaster developed Swallowtail Tea. Nestled in the tiny hamlet of Floyd, Virginia, Swallowtail has met that need by working with high-end tea importers and local herb farmers. Swallowtail is built on the same foundation that made Red Rooster successful - great quality, robust customer education, and great customer service.

Every step, from importing to tasting to blending and packaging is all done with the intent of providing our customer with the highest quality product. We inspect and cup every batch of tea and herbs we receive at our lab in Floyd and taste them religiously throughout their time in our care.
Transparent Sourcing
Knowing where our tea comes from is just as important as knowing where our food comes from. Our importer takes multiple origin trips a year, sending back pictures and information about the estates' farming practices, labor values, and production standards. We work hard to source a clean, ecologically responsible, and ethically produced product.
Local Herbs
Swallowtail Tea's philosophy is to provide the finest tea and herbs available. Though the Camilia sinensis plant does not grow well in our region, there are many herbs that we can source locally. From ginger to turmeric to anise and mint, our tea blends are designed to be both delicious and good for your body.

With deep family roots extending to the founding settlers of Floyd, this “Boomerang Daughter” came home after an 11-year sabbatical working as a professional archaeologist.
When she returned, Beth’s appetite for learning new things was satiated by the opportunity to join Red Rooster’s team and exploring all things regarding specialty coffee and fine tea. In February 2020, Beth took over the leadership and direction of Swallowtail Tea.
The Team
Because Swallowtail and Red Rooster are essentially the same team, we all work together for our common goal. Sourcing tea, cupping blends, providing customer service, and training our partners are all done under one roof with the goal of providing our customer with the best tea experience imaginable.

Why loose-leaf?
We package our tea loose in cans because we want our customers to have the best cup of tea possible. Using an infuser instead of a tea bag allows the tea leaves and herbs to fully expand, reaching their full potential. It also allows our customers to really appreciate the dedication to quality Swallowtail presents with their tea. You can see the long plucks, the beauty of the rolls. The leaves tell a story if you allow them to express themselves.
What's the relationship between Swallowtail Tea and Red Rooster Coffee?
Swallowtail Tea is under the umbrella of Red Rooster Coffee Roaster. Red Rooster was created in 2010 and has successfully joined the 3rd Wave coffee movement, winning several national awards for their superior coffee and barista skills. Swallowtail was created in 2017 with the same determination to provide the highest quality product.
