About Hazelnuts
Consumers worldwide are seeking healthier snack options. Hazelnuts, also known as filberts, are exceedingly high in “good cholesterol” or unsaturated fat and contain very little undesirable saturated fats.

Already a flavorful, healthy food enjoyed by millions worldwide, a recent report predicted a major increase in demand for hazelnuts over the next ten years as consumers seek out more wholesome snacks.

* Rich in unsaturated fats (mostly oleic acid)
* High in magnesium, calcium and vitamins B and E.
* Hazelnuts are good for your heart, help reduce the risk of cancer, and aid in muscle, skin, bone,
joint and digestive health.

Fun Hazelnut Facts

* The common hazel (Corylus avellana) is the species that is cultivated for its nut production. While
native to Europe and Western Asia it is currently grown around the world in the temperate region.
* Hazel comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for bonnet (Haesel) , while Corylus the genus name
probably comes from the Greek word for helmet (Korys), both referencing the shape of the nut.
* Turkey produces roughly 75% of the worlds hazelnut production and in that country the crop is
harvested primarily by hand.
* Hazelnuts are monoecious which means that the tree has both male and female flowers. Male flowers
are borne in long yellow catkins while female flowers are small with red pistils.

How many years does it take for a newly planted orchard to product a first crop?

There are many variables, but it typically takes 4 years to harvest a crop.

How many acres do you need to plant to make it worth the investment in equipment to harvest and grow hazelnuts?

It takes approximately 30 acres to warrant the investment in expertise and equipment. There are many different custom harvest operations available to growers who plant less than 30 acres. For efficiencies sake, having less than 10 acres in one area can be more of a challenge.

What should I know when planting hazelnuts?

Talk to an Agronomist with Valley Agronomics to get specifics. It is important to have the correct soil type favorable for hazelnuts to grow. Drainage is also a critical component as hazelnut trees do not do well in wet soil.
An Agronomist can also help with soil tests before planting to confirm proper pH and nutrient levels. They can also help with tips on nutritional needs and weed control measures.

When are hazelnuts typically planted?

Orchards are typically planted in the fall or early winter months.

Why do some orchards have trees planted closer together than others?

Tree spacing is one of the critical variables in good orchard design. Different varieties grow into different size trees which require different spacing for optimum production. In addition row spacing must be compatible with a growers equipment. There are also some orchards planted with a double density to get quicker return from the investment. However, after 9-10 years those orchards will be thinned to remove every other tree as the growing trees begin to crowd each other.

When are trees harvested?

Hazelnuts naturally fall to the ground in September and October depending on seasonality and tree variety. The nuts are then swept into a row and picked up by machine in prep for washing and drying.
