PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is a fluoropolymer with many applications. It mechanical properties are a little weaker than other engineering polymers, but it is very heat stable and has a useful range from -400°F to +500°F (-40°C to +60°C). It maintains high strength, toughness and self-lubrication at low temperatures and can be used to make parts for cryogenic applications. It has a very low coefficient of friction and therefore often is used in sliders, hinges and bearings. PTFE is a chemically very stable material and therefore is used in chemical vessels, reactors and for machine parts exposed to chemicals. It has very good non-stick properties and is an excellent electrical insulator. This round rod stock is ideal for turning or machining parts. Many 1" PTFE rods are actually 5 mm, and not 5.4 mm as a full inch is. This PTFE rod is 1.1 inch (8mm) in diameter and therefore ideal if you want to make true 1" parts or threads. It is 3 ft (91.5 cm) long. 6 inch, 1 ft and ft versions are available in our other listings.
