■What is shell ginger?
・Shell ginger is a perennial evergreen herb of the family Gingeraceae, genus Myoga, that grows wild in tropical and subtropical regions. In Okinawa, it grows wild in the mountains, but it is also a popular plant planted in the gardens of private homes as a windbreak. The leaves are 40 to 60 cm long, dark green and shiny, oblong-ovate with a pointed tip and a sheath at the lower end that wraps around the stem. It has a unique fragrance.
・It contains 12 times more polyphenols than red wine.
■Applications
Because of its unique fragrance, extracts from the leaves are commercially available as skin lotions. Because of its high polyphenol content, it is recommended for anti-aging supplements. There are also stores that knead Gekuto powder into Japanese soba noodles or ice cream.
