Basashi is a traditional food in Kumamoto prefecture in the Kyushu region in Japan. The word Basashi came from the word “baniku” which means horse meat and “sashi” which is an abbreviation for sashimi. "Basashi" in English translation means horse meat sashimi or raw horse meat. That goes from a variety of sashimi, including lean(red) meat, (shimofuri) marbled meat and fillet. Compared to any other meat, the horse meat is leaner. Horse meat has a slightly sweet flavor similar to that of beef. It is said that Basashi is healthier and it has high energy/protein and low fat.
