Coir is a natural fiber that is extracted from the husk of a coconut. The husk is soaked in water for several months and is then beaten to soften up the cellulose fibers. A hard yarn is then produced that is spun by hand. With its high level of lignin, coconut coir is considered one of the hardest and strongest materials. Unlike man-made fibers, coconut fiber is a recyclable green product. Coir fibers can be twisted to make coir ropes and woven to make coir mats. They are used in products such as rugs, doormats, brushes, mattresses, and so on.
