Black elderberry is an unpretentious shade-tolerant shrub up to 6 meters high. The leaves are large, reach 30 cm and consist of 3-7 leaflets. The flowers are small, collected in wide thyroid inflorescences, white or with a yellowish tinge. The berries are dark purple in color, almost black, have 2 or 3 seeds.
In Russia, the black elderberry grows in the south of the European part, as well as in some southern regions of Siberia. The plant chooses forests, edges, meadows, vacant lots, roads. It is easy to find it in thickets of nettles and quinoa
In the old days, elderberry found applied application: you can easily remove the core from its branches and get a tube for making a pipe. That is why they called the elder among the people "pishchal".
The Slavs believed that elderberry is the abode of evil spirits, so lightning never strikes it. It cannot be brought into the house and the stove can be heated with it: otherwise you will attract the spirits of evil into your dwelling. There is even a legend that the cross on which Christ was crucified was made of elderberry. It is believed that it was on the elder that the traitor Judas hanged himself.
However, to see an elderberry bush strewn with berries in a dream was always considered a good sign: it portended family happiness.
Healing properties
The most useful elements of the plant are berries and flowers. They have a diuretic, astringent, diaphoretic, disinfectant effect. The use of black elderberry tea helps to suppress various viral and bacterial infections, cure colds and improve overall well-being.
Black elderberries help to remove toxins from the body, replenish vitamins during early spring and autumn, and strengthen immunity. The plant has a decongestant effect, and is also used as an antipyretic and expectorant.
Broths are suitable for gargling with sore throat and tonsillitis. Preparations that contain elderberry root are used for bronchial and cardiac asthma, spasm of blood vessels.
Black elderberry can be used as infusions, decoctions, lotions, which help to improve the condition of the skin with wounds, burns, boils, and also have anesthetic and anti-inflammatory effect.

Contraindications: pregnancy, lactation, children under 12 years of age, individual intolerance, diabetes insipidus, colitis, enterocolitis, Crohn's disease
Black elderberry is a moderately poisonous plant. Abuse can cause harm in the form of digestive problems, diarrhea, vomiting, and headaches.
