Benzoic acid

 

Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C14H12O2. It is a colorless oily liquid and is insoluble in water. Slightly soluble in propylene phthalide. Soluble in oil, ethanol and ether. It has a light almond-like aroma and a spicy taste. It can be obtained by carrying out a synthesis reaction using sodium benzoate and benzyl chloride as raw materials. It is mainly used as a solvent for artificial musk, vanillin and other spices, a fixative for floral flavors and a blending spice for ylang-ylang and other flavors.

 

Application areas

 

1. Used as a solvent for musk and a fixative for essences, and as a substitute for camphor in celluloid. It is also used as a plasticizer, especially when nitrocellulose is mixed with resin, it can be mixed with diethyl or dibutyl phthalate. In addition, it is also used to prepare whooping cough medicine, asthma medicine and used as insect repellent and acaricide.

 

2. Mainly used as a fixative. It is used to prepare fruit-based food flavors and alcoholic flavors such as strawberry, pineapple, and cherry, and is also used in daily chemical flavors such as jasmine, lily of the valley, ylang-ylang, gardenia, tuberose, and lilac. The usage amount in gum is 280mg/kg; in candies 39mg/kg; in baked goods 33mg/kg; in soft drinks 45mg/kg; in cold drinks 12mg/kg.

 

3. Used as a solvent for cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate. Plasticizers for plastics. Fragrance fixative.

 

4. It is widely used in daily fragrance formulas, mainly as a filler and flavoring agent, and is also commonly used as a diluent for many highly viscous synthetic fragrances.
