Reactions & Applications
Castor Oil, also known as Ricinus Oil, is a triglyceride of fatty acid like most other fats. However, it is a unique fat in that it contains 87 90% ricinoleic acid, cis-12-hydroxyoctadec-9-enoic acid, a rare source of an eighteen carbon hydroxylated fatty acid with one double bond.
Castor Oil is recovered from castor beans by use of hydraulic presses or continuous mechanical screw expellers, followed by solvent extraction. This yields castor pomace with about 1-2% residual oil content. The castor pomace has a protein content of about 35% and it is mostly used as a fertilizer.
