Bacterial Vaginosis – A Quick Overview Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) results from disequilibrium of vaginal microbiota or normal vaginal flora. A normal vaginal flora is presence of non-pathogenic bacteria that form the environment of a healthy vagina. Usually hydrogen peroxide producing Lactobacillus sp. dominate the vaginal microbiota. Decline in their numbers give rise to Bacterial Vaginosis, mainly by Gardnerella vaginalis. This causes an imbalance in vaginal pH, making it more alkaline with pH exceeding pH 4.5.
An acidic vaginal pH value of 3.8 to 4.5 is a basic requirement for the optimal functioning of the body’s own system of protecting the vagina. This system can effectively avoid colonization by pathogenic germs and the occurrence of vaginal infections. But when the acid-base imbalance occurs in vagina, it may cause BV. BV Diagnosis can be carried out, once the symptoms appear by testing the vaginal discharge and by examining the vaginal pH level. BV can be asymptomatic occasionally, but when symptoms appear, it may include the following symptoms.
* Abnormal vaginal discharge of white or grey color * Malodorous vaginal discharge (Fishy smell) * Vaginal irritation * Burning sensation while urinating
