How important is the weight system in scuba diving?
Weight systems are a necessary part of Scuba diving; for those who are not aware, divers are buoyant. Even with the weight of your equipment, it's really difficult to reach depths while diving when your very anatomy makes you float.
As we know from our basic training, divers need to add extra weights to their equipment (most commonly in the form of small lead blocks) to compensate for the increased buoyancy of the exposure suit and buoyancy control device that we are wearing.

What are diving weights made of?
Diving weights are made from lead. This is a high density material that provides a heavy weight in a compact, easy to carry form.To protect the lead from corrosion often lead weights are coated with plastic and this can make them less abrasive on wetsuits.
How much weight does a diver need?
We require ballast weight to overcome the initial positive force of buoyancy. There are many factors that affect how much weight we will need to carry, but, as a general rule of thumb, you may need anywhere from 5 to 10% of your body weight in lead.
DIve weight belt importance:
Weight belts or other weight systems help scuba divers maintain neutral buoyancy underwater. The amount of weight you need to achieve neutral buoyancy depends on several different factors.
How many dive weights do I need?
Women should add 4 to 5 pounds of weight (about 2 kg) if they are diving in saltwater or subtract 4 to 5 pounds (about 2 kg) if diving in freshwater. Men should add 6 to 7 pounds (about 3 kg) if diving in saltwater or subtract 6 to7 pounds (about 3 kg) if diving in freshwater.
