Products Description

Many people may think that folding fans came from China, but did you know that they actually originated in Japan?

The history of folding fans dates back to the early Heian period, about 1,200 years ago.
At that time, paper was very valuable and not as easy to use as it is today.
For this reason, the documents that were commonly used were made from strips of wood or bamboo boards.
A document written in ink on this board (wooden strip) was bound and used to create the fan, which is called a hiougi.
Unlike today, the purpose of the fan was not to fan, but was also used as a tool to write waka poetry and to make notes so as not to forget the order of official events.

Plain cypress fans used to be owned by men, but when colors and pictures were added, women started using them for decoration.
After that, bat fans (because they look like bats when unfolded) were made by sticking paper on one side of a wooden or bamboo framework.
This is said to be the prototype of the current folding fan.

At the time, it was something that could only be used by people of a certain class, such as aristocrats and Shinto priests, but it is said that it was widely used among the common people during the Edo period.

On the other hand, fans that were exported to China during the Kamakura period spread to Europe, and it is said that during the Louis dynasty in France, ladies swinging fans became a common sight in social circles. increase.

At the end of the Edo period, folding fans that had been brought to Europe were reimported to Japan, resulting in the creation of ''silk fans'' with silk pasted on them. There is also a story.
