 Tatami is one of the most unique heritage which characterizes tranditional Japanese culture, houses and lifestyle. Its origin dates back all the way to 8th. century when it was developed as a matress only for the emperor. Later, it started to be used as the flooring of houses of upper-class population, and has been a symbol of the high society. When "Tea Ceremony" became so popular among Samurai (Japanes warriors) class, Tatami craftsmanship spread among working classes and became commonplace fooring material for Japanese houses. This Tatami-weaving craftsmanship has been kept on being refined and pased down even to the modern era in Japan.  

Tatami is made of " Igusa " (Rush), the plant that originates in the wetland of Far East Asia. In ancient times, Japanese found its tremendous merits and started to farm it in the paddy fields and use it as the raw material for Tatami. Now Japanese Igusa is mostly farmed in Kuamamoto prefcture who produces the best quality one thanks to its climatical and geographical conditions and her traditional farming tecninique.      

Traditional rectangular Tatami mats are pressed straw covered by the woven Igusa and edged by cloth. It is quite thick as 5.5 - 6.0cm. It can only be made by craftsmanship which requires special handskills that can only be mastered by a long time apprentice.

As the houses are getting more and more modern construction style and the population of carpenters of traditional houses are decreasing in Japan, the demand of Tatami is getting lesser and lesser. But since its beauty is deeply rooted in Japanese DNA, you will still find at least one or a few Tatami floor rooms in Japanese houses. Thus, it is still interwoven into many life aspects in Japan. Furthermore, as "Judo" played on Tatami mats, "Zen" style interior and "Tea Ceremony" has become so popular around the world, Tatami is gaining the internationally recognition now.

Igusa has many tremendous attributes.

1. It puriies the air in house. ( Natural air-purifier. )
   It has special ability to adsorb formaldehyde such as nitrogen dioxide or sulfur dioxide and dissolve it. 


2. It adjusts the humidity in rooms. ( Natural humidifier/drier. )
   It absorbs the humidity when it is too humid, and it relaeses the humidity when it is too dry. If Igusa is used as bed sheets, it absorbs the sweat 2.5 times more than cotton sheets! And it removes the humidity under the comforter to secure you and your loved the good sleep throughout the night. 


3. It reduces the bad smell. ( Natural deodorizer. )
   As it adsorbs the chamicals which generate bad odour, it diminishes various bad smells caused by sweat, cigaret, pet odor,  and so on. 


4. It is flame retardant!                                                                                                                                                              Igusa is proven to be highly flame-retardant and fire-spread-resistant by the official burning test. ( Flame-retardancy ) 


5. It is stain and dirt resistant!                                                                                                                                                     The test was conducted in the way that Soysauce and Coffee were spilled on Igusa textile and were left for 24 hours.    After that, the stain cleaning was made. Igusa textile was confirmed as one of the most stain-resistant carpet/rug material that nearly no stain was left after the cleaning. 6. It has natural relaxation effect. ( Natural relaxation )
   Igusa contains several natural aromatic components such as phytoncide, vanillin or dihydroactinidiolide. Phytoncide is the aromatic element that forest trees breath out. Thus, Igusa gives you some forest bathing effect as it is sometimes called       " Forest in a room ". Vanillin is the aromatic element of vanila essence, and dihydroactinidiolide is the aromatic element of English black tea. The nice laid-back and relaxed feeling when you enter into traditional Japanese houses with Tatami floor has scientific reasons. Igusa-woven carpet, mattress, or rugs will let you share a part of such nice feeling. 


7. If you cut the Igusa, its cross section shows honeycomb apearence. It means each Igusa straw has lots of hollow inside. That is the secret of its amazing attributes listed in the above, but it is also a godd noise and shock absorber. There is a reason why it has been used as Judo mats. 8. Furthermore, IKEHIKO added the spray coating by white ceder (Hinoki) sap that contains "Hinokitiol" that has antibacterial and deodorant effect on Igusa before the weaving.  ( Antibacterial )
