Tatami is one of the most unique heritage which characterizes tranditional Japanese culture, houses and lifestyle. Its origin dates back all the way to 8th. century when it was developed as a matress only for the emperor. Later, it started to be used as the flooring of houses of upper-class population, and has been a symbol of the high society. When "Tea Ceremony" became so popular among Samurai (Japanes warriors) class, Tatami craftsmanship spread among working classes and became commonplace fooring material for Japanese houses. This Tatami-weaving craftsmanship has been kept on being refined and pased down even to the modern era in Japan.

Tatami is made of " Igusa " (Rush), the plant that originates in the wetland of Far East Asia. In ancient times, Japanese found its tremendous merits and started to farm it in the paddy fields and use it as the raw material for Tatami. Now Japanese Igusa is mostly farmed in Kuamamoto prefcture who produces the best quality one thanks to its climatical and geographical conditions and her traditional farming tecninique.

Traditional rectangular Tatami mats are pressed straw covered by the woven Igusa and edged by cloth. It is quite thick as 5.5 - 6.0cm. It can only be made by craftsmanship which requires special handskills that can only be mastered by a long time apprentice.

As the houses are getting more and more modern construction style and the population of carpenters of traditional houses are decreasing in Japan, the demand of Tatami is getting lesser and lesser. But since its beauty is deeply rooted in Japanese DNA, you will still find at least one or a few Tatami floor rooms in Japanese houses. Thus, it is still interwoven into many life aspects in Japan. Furthermore, as "Judo" played on Tatami mats, "Zen" style interior and "Tea Ceremony" has become so popular around the world, Tatami is gaining the internationally recognition now.
With the sense of mission to preserve this endangered national heritage of Japan, we partner with IKEHIKO, a renowned interior goods maker of more than 130 years of history, who has made them more contemporary machin-made, yet preserving its original traits for modern urban society by simplifying the structure of Tatami mat into single layered woven Igusa with one or two back layers.

Igusa has many tremendous attributes.

This series is the most popular 82x82cm square mat type. Commonly it is placed on the floor by even number combination like 2 mats, 4 mats, 6 mats or more depending on your room size. Since this cotton back material may slip and desplace, it comes with connecting joints to prevent slipping as you see in the vdeo clip.

Upon your request, it can be customized in shape as below.

The latset research in Japan even suggested that the children who grow up in the traditional house with Tatami mats perform better in the school.

It also suits very well to Japandi interior.

So don't be reserved! Try to create some beautiful Japanese-inspired space at your home with ease for multiple benefits!
