Corn Gluten from Safe Agritrade
Corn gluten feed is a mixture of corn bran, steep liquor, and maize germ oil that is obtained during the wet milling process of corn. Mostly made up of zinc and gluten, maize gluten meal is the major protein found in corn (maize) endosperm. In the past, it was used as animal feed because it was a product of the processing of maize. True gluten, which is created when the proteins gliadin and gluten interact, is not present in maize gluten, despite the name.
Corn gluten meal is the principal protein of corn endosperm, consisting mainly of zine and gluten. It is produced by separating the starch and bran from the corn kernel and centrifuging the remaining protein fraction. It does not contain true gluten, which is formed by the interaction of gliadin and gluten in proteins in wheat, barley, and rye.
Corn gluten feed is mainly used as livestock feed for ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, as it provides a source of energy and fiber. It is also used in various food products, such as cornflakes, corn chips, tortillas, popcorn, corn syrup, and corn starch. It can provide some nutritional benefits, such as protein, carbohydrates, iron, zinc, and vitamin B6.
It is important to consume corn gluten in moderation and as part of a balanced diet. Along with corn starch, germ oil meal, corn gluten feed, and steep liquor, wet-milled maize also yields corn gluten meal. To obtain oil from corn, the endosperm and germ are separated by grinding the corn in water containing sulfur dioxide. Starch and proteins are separated from maize fiber, or bran, by screening the endosperm. To separate the starch from the corn gluten meal, the leftover proteins, and starch are centrifuged.
Corn gluten meal is used as an herbicide, fertilizer, pre-emergent, livestock feed, and food flavoring. It has a high nitrogen content and is not regulated in the US. It can outcompete weeds and act as much to prevent weeds' emergence.
