Himalayan natural soapberry shells are manually de-seeded from the Sapindus Mukorossi Gaertn fruits which are know in various common names as Wash Nuts, Washnuts, Washberry, Wash Berry, Soap Berry, Washing Nuts, Chinese Soapberry, Soap-nut, Aritha,  Rittha, Reetha, Dodan, Doda, Saponaria, Enmei-hi, Sapo, Kanma, Wu-Huan-zi, Thali, Ritha and others.  They are collected from the forest of Himalayas.   

The mukorossi tree grows uncultivated in poor quality ground and helps fights erosion, particularly in the Himalayan foothills. With the uptake on using these nuts for detergent purposes it also provides much needed income to the local population. It is a relatively hardy tree, being resistant to diseases and insects due to the high amounts of saponin – a natural pest and insect repellent for the tree. This makes the nuts useful in producing organic pesticides as well.

How to use soapberry shells?

Place 4-5 Soapberry (soap nut) shells in a cotton drawstring wash bag(s), tie it closed and toss it into the drum of your washing machine along with your articles of clothing that need washing.  Soapberries work in cold or hot water; but use hot water for best result. You can reuse this batch for 3 to 5 loads, and bag can be reused over and over until it wears out. The spent soapberries are 100% biodegradable and can be discarded in the manner of your choice - completely green and eco-friendly! The soapberries will be mushy and gray when they need to be composted for your garden. In place of it for large load of laundry, you can use 3Tbs (45mL) of soap nuts liquid detergent.

How do they WORK?

You use only soapberry shells but not the whole nut. We have already removed the seed in processing phase. The released saponins circulate as a natural surfactant in wash water reducing the surface tension of the water and freeing dirt, grime and oils from clothes. The soap berry shells easily work the same as chemical detergents - but are completely natural! It is technically incorrect to refer to soap berries as soap given that they contain no glycerin. Organic soap berry shells interestingly work as a natural fabric softener, reducing the need for softening additives and dryer sheets. We have not used a dyer sheet since converting to full use of organic soap berries as our primary laundry detergent. The shells can also be converted very easily to powder and liquid forms.  Thus, we are proud that our soap berries offer a plethora of other household cleaning solutions - all totally hypoallergenic and completely chemical-free!
