NATURAL: Made from 100% natural coconut fiber EFFICIENT: Retains moisture while providing drainage and aeration ATTRACTIVE: Adds extra appeal to plants
That coco liner is more than just an attractive addition to your hanging basket, it's a gardening superhero! Coco liners, also known as coco coir, are designed to hold dirt and plants inside wire containers.
The coarse, brown fibers are harvested from the inner shell of coconuts, making them a biodegradable, and healthy choice for your garden.
Coco coir is available as loose fibers, sheets, or pre-formed liners that fit neatly into your containers.
Not only do sheets and pre-formed liners come in multiple shapes and sizes, but coco liners are also flexible, making them easy to fit into your favorite hanging basket.
Moisture Regulating
Finding the right balance of moisture is key to gardening success. Not enough water and your plants wither and die. Too much water and you risk root rot and fungal growth.
Unlike their alternatives, coco liners can regulate your soil's moisture levels so that plants stay healthy.
Coco liners can hold up to 8x their weight in water, then slowly release it as the soil dries out. This makes watering your container garden a lot easier!
Natural
Like coconut milk, coconut meat, and coconut water have become increasingly popular, liners are the perfect way to utilize the coconut fibers that would otherwise go to waste.
And because they are 100% natural, coco liners are also biodegradable! Plant them (along with your plants) directly into the soil or mix the liner into the dirt for natural fertilizer.
Long-Lasting
Like any other material, no coco liner will last forever. However, coconut fibers are tough, resisting both time and decomposition.
A good coco liner should last through multiple growing seasons.
Making the Most of Your Coco Liner
Gardeners aren't the only ones that appreciate the advantages of coconut liners. Birds find them a great material for their nests, so if you have some aerial friends nearby, your liners might get pulled apart.
If your yard has a lot of avian activity, consider putting out a basket of straw, loose twigs, or even yarn to give birds an easily accessible source of nest material (so they'll leave your coco liners alone).
Coco liners are good at regulating moisture, but because the underside is exposed, a good amount of water will also evaporate into the air. To prevent this, place a plastic bag between your coco liner and the soil to hold moisture. Just be sure to cut a hole at the bottom of the bag first. Excess water will still be able to flow through, while still protecting the sides.
