Astaxanthin, also known as astaxanthin and lobster shell pigment, is a carotenoid and one of the most abundant carotenoid synthetic products. It is dark pink and has a similar chemical structure to β-carotene.

Astaxanthin occurs naturally in algae, shrimp, lobster, crab, wild salmon and krill. Carotenoids are organic colorants with antioxidant properties and a reddish-orange hue. Unlike other carotenoids, astaxanthin is able to interact with water and fat. Its unique structure makes astaxanthin a potent antioxidant.
