  Galaxolide is a polycyclic musk (PCM) used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and detergents.Galaxolide is a polycyclic musk (PCM) used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and detergents. It is one of the most frequently used synthetic, artificial musk fragrances.The starting material for its synthesis is 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethylindane, which is prepared by cycloaddition of tert-amylene to α-methylstyrene. The pentamethylindane is hydroxyalkylated with propylene oxide in a Friedel–Crafts reaction using aluminum chloride as a catalyst (analogous to the synthesis of phenylethyl alcohol from benzene and ethylene oxide .

is a synthetic ingredient with a clean sweet musky floral woody odor used in fragrances.
It is one of the musk components that perfume and cologne manufacturers use to add a musk
odor to their products. Galaxolide was first synthesized in 1965, and used in the late 1960s in
some fabric softeners and detergents. High concentrations were also incorporated in
fine fragrances.
