Magnesium sulfate, also known as sulfur bitter salt, bitter salt, catharsis salt, Epsom salt, is a compound containing magnesium. Appearance is colorless or white easily weathered crystal or white powder. Odourless. It tastes bitter and salty. It is deliquescent. Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate loses six molecules of crystal water at 150℃ and all crystal water at 200℃. The density of anhydrous material is 2.66, the melting point is 1124℃, and it decomposed at the same time. Soluble in water, soluble in alcohol, ether and glycerol, insoluble in acetone. Magnesium sulfate is a common chemical reagent and drying reagent. Wet application of magnesium sulfate has the effect of reducing inflammation and swelling, and can reduce local tissue damage. Wet application of magnesium sulfate plus plastic wrap is one of the effective methods for treating chemotherapeutic phlebitis. Used as a purgative in medicine, because it can increase the intestinal osmotic pressure, so that there is a lot of water in the intestine, the volume increases, thus stimulating the intestinal mucosa and promoting diarrhea. Used for constipation, intestinal toxicant elimination and deworming drugs. It is also used in cholelithiasis.
