Sodium deoxycholate is an ionic detergent that can be used to lyse cells and dissolve proteins that are poorly soluble in water. It can also be used in biliary lysis experiments. The principle is that bile or bile salts have surface activity, which can quickly activate autolytic enzymes and accelerate the self-dissolution of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae.
