Necessity of Fetal Monitoring

According to modern medical science, fetal heart rate (FHR) is important basis for checking whether a fetus is healthy. Recoding changes in FHR helps detect signs of fetal hypoxia, fetal distress, cord around the neck, and so on. FHR changes most significantly in the following periods:

(1)  Within 30 minutes after a pregnant woman gets up

(2)  Within 60 minutes after a pregnant woman has lunch

(3)  Within 30 minutes before a pregnant woman falls asleep (normal FHR range: 120-160 beats/minute)

In the preceding periods, activities such as food digestion require more oxygen, which reduces oxygen supply to the fetus. This may cause symptoms such as fetal hypoxia. Therefore, monitoring FHR in these periods helps best understand the health condition of the fetus.

The monitoring in these periods can only be performed by a pregnant woman at home. Therefore, FHR monitoring at home is of critical importance.

Method for Detecting FHT

1.   You can pay attention to the position where a doctor detects FHT in a hospital and try detection yourself at home. This is the simplest method.

2.   Because the fetus moves in the abdomen of a pregnant woman, the position for detecting FHT may change accordingly. The common methods for detecting FHT are as follows:

A.     Before the 24th week of pregnancy, FHT can be detected in or around the middle of the abdomen below the navel.

B.     After the 26th week of pregnancy, FHT can be detected most clearly at the position where the fetal back is located.

C.     Fetal movement is usually the movement of limbs of a fetus. When fetal movement is frequently felt on the right of the abdomen, FHT can usually be detected on the left of the abdomen, and vice versa.

D.     The head position and breech position may also affect FHT detection. If a fetus is in a head position, FHT can be detected on the left or right below the navel. If a fetus is in a breech position, FHT can be detected on the left or right above the navel.
