Stamped fin heat sinks can usually be identified by the zippered fin plates that hold the fins in place, and it is usually easy to see that the heat sink is in two parts - the base and the stamped fins. Stamped fin heat sinks are manufactured using a die stamping process where aluminum or copper metal sheets are stamped into specific configurations depending on the intended application. The zipper fins are manufactured in a stamping process to form the interlocking fins. Zipper fin heat sinks can add extra strength to the heat sink and can allow for stamped fins of different shapes. The stamped die fins are then sanded with abrasive tape, and these stamped fins are then attached to the heatsink base, usually using solder.
For maximum design flexibility, stamped fin heat sinks can be stamped in a variety of geometries and thicknesses. Stamped fin heat sink technology offers a great way to produce high efficiency, high aspect ratio, lightweight heat sinks in a small package size, ideal for medium to high volume production. The technology also offers lower non-recurring engineering expenses, so prototype setup costs are minimal.
Aluminum stamped fin heat sinks can be fabricated using A6063 aluminum alloy, which produces a high thermal conductivity of ~200 W/(m-K). Copper stamped fin heat sinks are typically fabricated using the C1100, which produces very high thermal conductivity of about 400 W/(m-K).
