Coloured Micas which is their popular name or Pearlescents as they are also called, are beautiful natural colours that are created by coating muscovite mica flakes with high heat resistant iron oxides, ultramarines (referred to as 'nature identical') or dyes.
The pearlescent pigment cross-section has a physical structure similar to pearls; the inner core is a low optical refractive index mica, and the outer layer is a high refractive index metal oxide such as titanium dioxide or iron oxide.
Under ideal conditions, the pearlescent pigment is uniformly dispersed in the coating and forms a multi-layered distribution parallel to the surface of the material. As in the pearl, the incident light passes through multiple reflections, and the interference reflects the pearlescent effect.
