Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of 0.0218% to 2.11%. Also called carbon steel. Generally, it also contains a small amount of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. Generally, the higher the carbon content of carbon steel, the greater the hardness and the higher the strength, but the lower the plasticity.






The smelting of carbon steel is usually carried out in converter and open hearth furnace. Bof generally smelting ordinary carbon steel, and open furnace can smelting all kinds of high quality steel. Oxygen top blown bof steelmaking technology develops rapidly and has a tendency to replace open hearth steelmaking. The refined liquid steel is injected into the ingot mold and various ingot are obtained. After forging or rolling, the ingot is processed into steel plates, strips, bars and sections of various shapes. Carbon steel is usually used directly under hot rolling condition. When used to manufacture tools and various machine parts, it needs to be heat treated according to the requirements of use; As for steel castings, most of them are heat treated.

Carbon steel is a steel with carbon content from about 0.05 up to 2.1 percent by weight.
Carbon steel is broken down into four classes based on carbon content

Low-carbon steel
0.05 to 0.25% carbon (plain carbon steel) content.

Medium-carbon steel
Approximately 0.3–0.5% carbon content.Balances ductility and strength and has good wear resistance; used for large parts, forging
and automotive components.

High-carbon steel
Approximately 0.6 to 1.0% carbon content.
Very strong, used for springs, edged tools, and high-strength wires.

Ultra-high-carbon steel
Approximately 1.25–2.0% carbon content. Steels that can be tempered to great hardness.
Used for special purposes like (non-industrial-purpose) knives, axles, and punches.
Most steels with more than 2.5% carbon content are made using powder metallurgy.
