What is shockwave therapy?acoustic wave therapy for ed

Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a clinically proven and highly effective treatmentfor chronic soft tissue injuries and certain bone conditions. An extracorporeal shockwave is defined as a non-evasive, nonelectrical high energy sound wave that passes through the body via a handheld probe.

The shock waves produce a rapid increase in blood circulation to the target area and will break down fibrous scar tissue which buildsup over time, especially with chronic conditions. The breakdown of scar tissue is the key to why shock wave therapy is so effective. Unlike normal elasticated tissue, scar tissue is nonelastic and will prevent normal movement and function, thereby weakening the unaffected tissue surrounding it, often causing further damage and pain. By increasing circulation and breaking down scar tissue, shockwave therapy will stimulate cell regeneration and promote normal healing and rapid reduction of pain. The normal function can then be restored.

How does shockwave therapy work?sound wave therapy for ed

Shockwaves are sound waves that havespecific physical characteristics, including nonlinearity, high peak pressurefollowed by low tensile amplitude, short rise time, and short duration (10 ms). They have a single pulse, a wide frequency range (0-20 MHz) and a high-pressureamplitude (0 to120 MPa). This produces a positive and negative phase ofshockwave.

The positive phase produces direct mechanical forces, whereas thenegative phase generates cavitation and gas bubbles that subsequently implode athigh speeds, generating a second wave of shockwaves. In comparison toultrasound, another commonly used modality in physiotherapy, the shockwave peakpressure is approximately 1000 times greater than the peak pressure of anultrasound wave

What conditions are commonly treated with shockwave?

  • Plantar Fasciitis or foot pain

  • Achilles Tendinopathy or heel pain

  • Lateral Epicondylosis (Tennis Elbow)

  • Medial Epicondylosis (Golfer`s Elbow)

  • Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy

  • Patellar Tendinosis (Jumper`s Knee)

  • Greater trochanteric bursitis/glutealtendinopathy (hip bursitis)

  • Stress fractures

  • Myofascial trigger point release

  • Erectile disfunction

Shockwave is most suited for thoseconditions that are typically chronic in nature (greater than 6 weeks) whichhave not responded to other treatment. These are usually overuse injuries orrepetitive strain injuries.

This shockwave technology has the following effects

  • The mechanical pulse and tension forceson the tissue have been shown to improve microscopic circulation and metabolismin the area by increasing cell membrane permeability. This improves bloodsupply and oxygenation of the treated area and supports faster healing of bothtendon and bone.

  • The collapse of the bubbles created bythe negative phase of the acoustic waves cause a force that can mechanicallybreak down calcific deposits in damaged tissues.

  • Stimulates the production of collagen

  • Shockwaves stimulate osteoblasts arecells responsible for bone healing and new bone production.

  • Shockwaves stimulate fibroblasts thatare the cells responsible for healing of connective tissue such as tendons.

OR IN OTHER WORDS…it triggers the body`snatural healing response!

  • It reduces pain both in the short-termby overwhelming local nerve endings and diminishing their activity, and in thelong-term through the Gate-control theory of pain. Most clients will report animmediate reduction in pain with movement following the treatment.

  • It also releases trigger points inmuscles by unblocking the calcium pump and reverses the metabolic crisis in themyofilaments causing the tension and sensitivity in that area.

Advantages of shockwave therapy

  • Accelerates healing

  • Effective for chronic conditions

  • Minimal side effects

  • Noninvasive treatment option that mayhelp to avoid surgery or other invasive procedures such as cortisone injectionsor plasma rich protein (PRP) injections

  • No medication is needed

  • Quickly reduces pain

  • Non invasive

How long does the treatment last and what is the results?

The therapy session takes about 15minutes depending on the disorder that is treated. In general, 3 -5 sessionsare necessary at weekly intervals. The greatest success rate when dealing withproblem areas is achieved by following a 12 week treatment program. After only3 sessions, over 80% of patients report painlessness or significant painreduction. This pain reduction/elimination leads to restoration of fullmobility and thus improving quality of life.

Repeated treatments may enhanceefficacy.

  • 91% improvement for calcific tendonitis(Journal of American Medical Association 2003)

  • 77% improvement for tennis elbow(Journal of Orthopaedics 2005)
