Silicon-manganese alloy is an alloy composed of manganese, silicon, iron and a small amount of carbon and other elements. It is a kind of iron alloy with wide use and large yield. Ferromanganese alloy containing enough silicon, melting temperature range 1075℃ -- 1320℃. In recent years, rotary and closed electric furnace has been used for smelting. Silicon-manganese alloy is a reducing agent of low carbon ferromanganese and manganese metal smelting, as well as a composite deoxidizer, alloy agent and desulfurizer in steelmaking production. Usually used as reducing agent accounted for 40%, deoxidizer and alloy agent accounted for 60%.

Manganese and silicon are the main alloying elements used in carbon steel. Manganese is one of the most important deoxidizers in steelmaking and is used to deoxidize almost all kinds of steel. Because when manganese is deoxidized, the oxygen products generated have a lower melting point and are easy to float; Manganese can also increase the deoxidation effect of strong deoxidizers such as silicon and aluminum. All industrial steel needs to add a small amount of manganese as a desulfurizer, so that the steel can be hot rolled, forging and other processes without fracture, manganese is also the most important alloy element in various steel, in alloy steel will also add more than 15% manganese to increase the structural strength of steel. Silicon is the most important alloying element after manganese in pig iron and carbon steel. In steel production, silicon is mainly used as a deoxidizer for molten metal or as an alloy additive to increase steel strength and improve its properties. Silicon is also an effective graphitizing medium, which can change carbon in cast iron into free graphite carbon. Up to 4% silicon can be added to standard gray cast iron and ductile cast iron. Large amounts of manganese and silicon are added to the molten steel in the form of ferroalloys: ferromanganese, silicomanganese and ferrosilicon.

Production of manganese silicon alloy raw materials are manganese ore, manganese rich slag, silica, coke, dolomite (or limestone), fluorite. Manganese-silicon alloys can be produced using a manganese ore or a mixture of several manganese ores (including manganese-rich slag). Because the manganese silicon alloy requires lower content of fe and P than high carbon ferromanganese, the manganese ore smelting manganese silicon alloy is required to have higher ratio of manganese to iron and manganese to phosphorus. The higher the manganese content of the manganese ore used, the better the indicators.


Silicon-manganese alloy is mainly used as the intermediate material of deoxidizer and alloy agent in iron and steel production, as well as the main raw material of low carbon ferromanganese production. Silicon-manganese alloy is an alloy composed of manganese, silicon, iron and a small amount of carbon and other elements. It is a kind of iron alloy with wide use and large yield. Its consumption accounts for the second place of electric furnace ferroalloy products. Silicon and manganese in silicon-manganese alloy have a strong affinity with oxygen. When silicon-manganese alloy is used in steelmaking, the resulting deoxidation products MnSiO3 and MnSiO4 melt at 1270℃ and 1327℃ respectively, with the advantages of low melting point, large particles, easy to float, good deoxidation effect and so on. Under the same conditions, the burning loss rate of manganese or silicon deoxidization is 46% and 37% respectively, while that of silicon manganese alloy deoxidization is 29%. Therefore, it has been widely used in steelmaking, its output growth rate is higher than the average growth rate of ferroalloy, and it has become an indispensable composite deoxidizer and alloy additive in steel industry. Silicon-manganese alloy with carbon content below 1.9% is also used for the production of medium and low carbon ferromanganese and electrosilicon-thermal manganese metal semi-finished products.In ferroalloy production enterprises, usually the silicon-manganese alloy used in steelmaking is called commodity silicon-manganese alloy, the silicon-manganese alloy used in smelting low carbon iron is called self-use silicon-manganese alloy, and the silicon-manganese alloy used in smelting metal is called high-silicon silicon-manganese alloy. Manganese can combine with silicon to form silicide MnSiO3, MnSiO and MnSiO3. MnSi is the most stable silicide as can be seen from the state diagram of silicon manganese. The negative value of the free energy of silicide formation of manganese is much larger than the negative value of the free energy of carbide production of manganese. The higher the silicon content in the silicon-manganese alloy, the lower the carbon content.

The use of silicon manganese alloy:

The manganese silicon alloy is added to the liquid steel for deoxidation, and the deoxidation product is MnSiO3. Compared with FeSiO3, the melting point of FeSiO3 is lower, the surface tension is larger, and it is easy to float from the liquid steel, so there are fewer inclusions in the steel. When the manganese silicon alloy deoxidizes, the utilization rate of both manganese and silicon is high, so the manganese silicon alloy is a good compound deoxidizer. Manganese-silicon alloy with high manganese-carbon ratio is especially suitable for smelting low carbon steel containing manganese. As the production of killed steel, high strength low alloy steel, stainless steel, heat resistant steel increases, the amount of manganese silicon alloy increases accordingly.
