Etched nameplates and tags are most commonly made out of aluminum, stainless steel and brass metals that are used for marking equipment, serialization, machine identification and rating tags. The etching process involves using a chemical resist to remove targeted areas of a particular metal.

The etched areas can be filled with a wide variety of rich colored paints, enamels or left blank for a more natural look.

Embossing is the process used to raise a pattern of copy above the original (normal) surface by the use of matched male and female dies. Stamping is the opposite and used to depress copy below the surface. Metals suitable for embossing and stamping include aluminum, brass, CRS and stainless. In general, metals which have been annealed, are more easily embossed. Embossing can be used on a variety of materials both metallic and non-metallic.

The most common applications include equipment nameplates, control panels, machine overlays and brand labels.

Electroforming is a process in which a certain thickness of metal is electrodeposited on a core mold or a sample by the principle of electrolysis, and then the two are separated to manufacture a mold cavity. The precision and finish of the electroforming mold cavity are exactly the same as those of the core mold. Electroforming is also known as the "cloning" technique of non-living matter.
