Concept introduction of switch:
Switch is a new generation of hub, which is also used to gather the cables of transmission media together to connect computers. But the hub works in the physical layer of the OSI model, while the switch works in the data link layer of the OSI model.
Function of the switch:
1. Provide network interface
The most important application of switches in the network is to provide network interfaces, and the interconnection of all network devices must be realized with switches. It mainly includes:
(1) Connect network equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls and wireless access points.
(2) Connect computers, servers and other computer equipment.
(3) Connect network printer, webcam, IP phone and other network terminals.
2. Expand network interface
Although some switches have a large number of ports (such as 48 ports), when the network scale is large, the number of network interfaces that a switch can provide is often insufficient. At this point, two or more switches must be connected together to expand the network interface exponentially.
3. Expand network scope
The switch and computer or other network equipment are connected together by transmission medium, and the transmission distance of each transmission medium is limited. According to different network technologies, the transmission distance of the same transmission medium is also different. When the network coverage is large, the switch must be used to relay, so as to expand the network transmission distance and increase the network coverage.
