Characteristic
The element symbol Ga, atomic number 31, is a group IIIA metal. The density is 5.904g/cm3, the melting point is 29.76 ° C (302.91 K, 85.57 ℉), and the boiling point is 2204 ℃ (2477 K, 3999 ℉). Solid gallium is blue gray, and liquid gallium is silver white. Gallium is hard and brittle at low temperatures, but melts when it exceeds room temperature. It is soluble in acids and alkalis, and slightly soluble in mercury. It is highly corrosive. Gallium is relatively stable in dry air. Oxide film will be formed on the surface to prevent further oxidation, and it will lose luster in humid air. Gallium has a very low freezing point. When it is converted from liquid to solid, its expansion rate is 3.1%. Gallium can soak glass, so it should not be stored in glass containers, but in plastic containers.
Application:
1. Gallium nitride is manufactured for use in light emitting diodes.
2. To manufacture gallium arsenide for use in integrated circuits and various detectors.
3. Gallium phosphide can also be used for light emitting diodes.
4. It is used as a catalyst to prepare or synthesize other elements.
