Brief Introduction：
Manganese is a silver-gray metal, much like iron, but softer than iron. If manganese contains a small amount of an impurity, carbon or silicon, it becomes very hard and brittle. The pure metal, however, is not very useful, for it rusts more easily than iron, and soon becomes grey and tarnished in the damp air -- a layer of manganese oxide forms on the surface. Moreover, because manganese has a lower melting point than iron, is not as mechanically strong as steel, and is much more expensive than steel, it is hardly produced, but steel is produced in large quantities.
