* How fast should it accelerate from zero?
* How much hill resistance do you want to overcome?
* How much air resistance does you car have?
With these figures, add them all up and create a resistance profile for different speeds and situations. Design you car for the highest resistance.So now you have speeds and force for your vehicle, if you have the wheel size you can calculate the torque your motor needs to deliver.
To keep it lightweight and powerful, I would go for a Permanent magnet Synchronous motor. You need a big diameter to get the torque, so an outer-rotor motor would be great. But induction motors might work, and to save costs you would want something that is standard or close to standard.
