Colorless transparent monocline crystal, easily soluble in water,methanol and ethanol, and is deliquescent in the air.Calcium nitrate is also an oxidant, and so is combustible and explosive to organic substances and sulfur.

Exposure to heat may result in build-up of dangerous pressures. A strong oxidizer, reacts violently upon contact with many organic substances, particularly textile and paper.
