Used in libraries to prevent books from being corroded by acid;

Due to its refractory nature, it can be used as a furnace lining;
Used as a reference for white in colorimetry; (The emissivity is about 0.9)
Fine pressed magnesium oxide can be used as an optical coating (Kodak's trade name: Irtran-5). When the coating thickness is
between 300 nanometers and 7 millimeters, the coating is transparent. The refractive index of a 1mm thick coating is 1.72.
