Piston ring is designed to ensure the good sealing between the cylinder and piston when pistons work against pressure in the compressor, also be mounted Inside the ring groove of the piston for the oil free or lubricated compressors.Different cut configuration and materials are adopted to extend the service life of whole compressor and to reduce the maintenance cost .

Step cut compression piston rings is notched , usually consist of several groups of piston rings, not a single piston ring seal, a certain Angle must exist between the piston ring and the cut during the installation, generally three groups of pistons or two adjacent incision Angle is 120 degrees.The sealing principle of piston ring is similar to labyrinth sealing, and When the compressor stops running the piston ring can not play a sealing role, a good sealing can be obtained due
to thermal expansion during the compressor operation.




Material

Metal :Copper ,Alloy Steel ,cast steel piston ring is suitable for the oil lubricated compressor , such as the cast steel piston ring is widely used for the coke oven gas compressor.Mental rings will be with a long service life.
Non-mental material must be self-lubricating,such as filled PTFE, PEEK,PPS,Teflon,


For lubricated service, time-proven bronze and cast iron are still commonly used materials.For no lubricated application , as the Low-friction materials are capable of running without lubrication. self-lubricating properties of filled PTFE materials have been used on the without- lubrication compressor to improved to give longer lifetimes。




PEEK has excellent thermal resistance to high temperature. It can be used at 250℃ for a long time and the instant temperature can reach 300℃.Because of large rigidity ,stable dimension and small linear expansion coefficient, peek is close to the metal aluminum.With good chemical stability, peek has strong corrosion resistance to acid, alkali and almost all organic solvents, and has flame retardant and radiation resistance properties; PEEK provides excellent resistance to sliding and fretting wear,especially high wear resistance and low friction coefficient up to 250.




Filled PTFE (RPTFE), As a kind of common Self-lubricating materials,the different recipe is available for the low ,middle ,high pressure, and oil less working condition.Rider ring & piston rings and packing are made from PTFE (Teflon) with various fillers such as Glass fibre 5-25%( hardness, can be very abrasive), Carbon 10-35% ( deformation strength, Performs well in water and steam applications), Graphite 5-15%(excellent wear properties, is good where aluminium and water are concerned.), Bronze 40-60%(high thermal conductivity), MoS2 5-7%(reduce friction, is excellent.

Filled PTFE ring deposit a thin film onto the sliding counter-surface. This film once stabilized becomes the lubricant against which the component (piston or packing ring) can continue to slide with reduced friction and an acceptably low wear rate.

very high resistance to wear and
deformation under load and perfect
wear resistance in dry and wet
environments. They do not wear
off the surface in contact even
at high velocities. They have very
high heat conductivity. Compared
to types with other fillers, their
resistance to alkalies is better.
Glass-filled (PTFE) piston rings
are recommended where chemical
resistance is important. they have
higher wear resistance and
deformation resistance under
load.
Bronze-filled (PTFE) piston rings
have highest heat conductivity,
Their resistance to deformation
and wear under load is good.
They can be used at low and
high PV values where chemical
resistance is not necessary. If
surface in contact is not too
hard, they are also appropriate
at high speeds in dry conditions.

Replaced time of piston ring

Generally the replace time depend on the media gas,piston ring material and compressor working condition.
After 8000 hours the piston ring and guide ring must be replaced,
Also after 3000 hours running the compressor need a routine checking,the piston ring can’t be replaced ;
after 6000 hours the ringcan be replaced in accordance with the actual working condition.


Piston ring used in the low pressure stage can be with a long service life than in the high pressure stage .
According to the maintenance plan, if there is no problem with the rings, it can be replaced until the overhaul time reaches.
For L type compressor , replacing piston ring & guide ring of Horizontal cylinder will be more frequent than vertical
cylinder。
