The basic design idea of MBBR is to be able to operate continuously without blocking, backwashing, small head loss and large specific surface area. This can be achieved by biofilm growing on a small carrier unit, and the carrier moves freely with water flow in the reactor. In the aerobic reactor, the carrier is pushed to move by aeration; In the anoxic/anaerobic reactor, the carrier is moved by mechanical stirring. To prevent the loss of filler in the reactor, a porous filter screen can be set at the outlet of the reactor (Fig. 1). MBBR is generally rectangular or cylindrical structure. The rectangular reactor is evenly divided into several cells or no cells along the length of the tank with a partition. In general, the water flow in the reactor is in a push flow state, while in each cell, due to aeration fluidization, the water flow is in a completely mixed state. Polyethylene or polypropylene suspension filler with a specific gravity close to water and a large specific surface area is filled in the tank. The attached surface of biofilm in the reactor can reach 500m2/m3, and the actual specific surface area (the inner surface of the filler) can reach 350m2/m3. Perforated aeration pipe aerates on one side to make the filler circulate in the tank. The bottom of the reactor with cylindrical structure is provided with a microporous aerator. In addition, some reactors are not only equipped with aeration devices at the bottom of the tank, but also with mixing devices. These stirring devices can make the reactor convenient and flexible to be applied under anoxic conditions. Sometimes in order to prevent the stripping and volatilization caused by aeration, a cover can be added above the reactor.
In foreign countries, MBBR has been used to treat domestic sewage and some industrial wastewater in pilot scale, pilot scale and production studies, and good results have been achieved. The test shows that the moving bed biofilm sewage treatment process is suitable for the treatment of medium and small domestic sewage and industrial organic wastewater. Among them, the integrated or buried sewage treatment device has a good prospect for promotion and application in China. However, there are still some problems in the moving bed biofilm reactor. For example, the moving state of the filler in the reactor is not balanced, and there are dead zones in the tank to varying degrees. How to improve the hydraulic flow characteristics in the reactor and reduce the operating energy consumption is a problem worthy of in-depth discussion in the research and development of the moving bed biofilm reactor. Operating MBBR in SBR mode is an improvement of MBBR technology. This reactor is called Moving Bed Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (MBSBBR). MBSBBR has the advantages of both MBBR and SBR. Another improvement is to make the packing move in the reactor with the water flow. This reactor is called the circulating moving carrier biofilm reactor, which has the advantages of MBBR and internal circulation reactor.

Self balance, no manual control of FM and MLSS concentration is required; There is no problem of sludge bulking and sludge loss commonly existing in activated sludge process.

MBBR operational advantages
(1) The specific gravity of LEVAPOR packing is slightly lighter than that of water, and it is equivalent to that of water after film forming. It can be fluidized in water under the action of weak airflow.
(2) As long as the oxygenation capacity allows and ensures its free suspension, the filling rate can be selected according to the needs of the project and process.
(3) The suspended filler floats on the surface of water without aeration, without fixed support, which makes the installation and maintenance of the reaction tank more convenient; During aeration, due to the biofilm growing on the filler, its density is close to that of water, and it is in a fluidized state in water and frequently contacts with water, which increases the oxygen transfer rate. At the same time, the old biofilm falls off to ensure the activity of the biofilm and avoid potential sludge bulking.
(4) The specific gravity of the filler is close to that of water, no backwashing or backflow is required, and the energy-saving effect is remarkable.
MBBR can realize simultaneous nitrification and denitrification
Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification can realize simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and carbon removal in the same reactor.
In the MBBR process, the LEVAPOR carrier can form an obvious ORP gradient from the surface to the inside, realizing simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) and shortcut nitrification and denitrification. The nitrogen removal efficiency of the aerobic tank is up to 60%, saving carbon sources.
The realization of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification shortens the time of nitrification and denitrification, saves the power consumption required for reflux, reduces the amount of aeration and sludge, and saves the total investment and annual operating costs.
