Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an organic compound with the formula (HOCH2CH2)2O. It is a colorless, practically odorless, and hygroscopic liquid with a sweetish taste. It is a four carbon dimer of ethylene glycol. It is miscible in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, and ethylene glycol.[3] DEG is a widely used solvent.[4] It can be a contaminant in consumer products; this has resulted in numerous epidemics of poisoning since the early 20th century.
Application: 1. Mainly used as gas dehydrating agent and aromatics extraction solvent. Also used as nitrocellulose, resins, oils and fats, printing inks and other solvents, textile softeners, finishing agents, as well as from coal tar in the extraction of coumarone and indene. In addition, diethylene glycol is also used as brake fluid matching agent, celluloid softener, antifreeze and emulsion polymerization diluent. Also used in rubber and resin plasticizers; polyester resin; fiber glass; urethane foam; lubricant viscosity improver and other products. Used in the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resin.
