CanGas On-site membrane nitrogen generator
On-site nitrogen supply for ships and vessels
CanGas nitrogen generators are particularly appropriate for:
Chemical tankers
Drill ships
FPSO (Floating Production Storage & Offloading) units
LNG/LPG carriers
PSV (Platform Supply Vessels)

Nitrogen generators have become indispensable helpers in the marine industry today. We can supply you special membrane or PSA nitrogen generators designed for the demanding conditions of shipboard operations. The nitrogen generation systems from CanGas are not only made for durability, they are also engineered to be light weight, compact, automatically operated, easily maintained and trouble-free in order to meet all requirements in the marine environment. CanGas’s membrane or PSA nitrogen generators can even be made suitable for top deck installations if so required.

CanGas N2 membrane has been especially developed for nitrogen generation combining low air consumption at all temperature levels with high nitrogen capacity.

CanGas Use N2 calculator to learn how much nitrogen you can make. Estimate the number and type of membranes you need by inputting the nitrogen flow, temperature, nitrogen purity and pressure.

Efficient air separation and nitrogen generation with CanGas N2 is especially suitable when spaces are being blanketed to achieve an inert atmosphere. The reduction of atmospheric oxygen results in many different applications.

CanGas N2 modules have high selectivity and permeability. They combine low air consumption with high nitrogen capacity. The benefits for you: you need a small compressor, only a few modules, and operational costs are low.

CanGas N2 is especially suitable in a wide variety of blanketing or inerting. As opposed to other membrane modules that are available on the market, the CanGas module combines excellent capacity with low air consumption. Alternatively, our CanGas N2 Selective module can be used for low throughput volumes. The Selective version achieves high purity with extremely low air consumption. Energy consumption is especially low, while the capacity remains competitive.

Benefits of On-Site Nitrogen Generators
1. Time Savings
Generating nitrogen on-site saves industrial users from operational downtime because of nitrogen gas needs. Downtime due to logistics issues with trucking compressed nitrogen gas cylinders from vendor locations incurs huge time and financial losses for industrial users every year. In contrast, having an on-demand nitrogen generation system in place ensures that you have a 24-hour supply of high-purity gas for your processes.
2. Cost Savings
Generating nitrogen on-site is more cost-effective than purchasing the gas from vendors due to savings on the cost of transportation and storage. This is especially true for membrane nitrogen generators (as opposed to PSA systems). Transporting
nitrogen gas between locations will require the services of an internal logistics team or trucking companies that charge a fair price for freight.

3. Safety and Reliability
On-site nitrogen gas generation systems can be safer than nitrogen gas from cylinders. Nitrogen gas leaks from damaged cylinders can be toxic to humans in large, concentrated quantities, particularly when it is present in confined spaces. Using a PSA or membrane filtration system reduces the need for the storage of such containers and can help reduce the associated risks.

Working Principle

Membrane Nitrogen Generator Working Principle
It utilizes a high-selectivity membrane for nitrogen gas separation. The material is a semi-permeable layer made of thousands of flexible, cylindrical filaments with pore sizes ranging from 0.03 to 10 microns. To separate nitrogen gas, dry, compressed air is applied over the material which is housed in a cylindrical vessel (it is essential to use dehumidified air to prevent clogging of the membrane fibers). The membrane allows N2 to pass through but inhibits oxygen, water vapor, inert gases, and air-borne impurities.

How Membrane Nitrogen Generators Work
Atmospheric air contains essentially 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Ordinary dry compressed air is filtered and passed through a technically advanced bundle of hollow membrane fibers where nitrogen is separated from the feed air by selective permeation. Water vapor and oxygen rapidly permeate safely to the atmosphere, while the nitrogen gas is discharged under pressure into the distribution system. Pressure, flow rate and membrane size/quantity are the main variables that affect nitrogen production.
Nitrogen purity (oxygen content) is controlled by throttling the outlet from the membrane bundle(s). At a given pressure and membrane size, increasing the nitrogen flow allows more oxygen to remain in the gas stream, lowering nitrogen purity. Conversely, decreasing nitrogen flow increases purity. For a particular purity, higher air pressure to the membrane gives a higher nitrogen flow rate. Purity ranges of less than 90% to 99.9% are possible. By combining multiple membrane bundles, an infinite number of flow/purity ranges are available to satisfy practically any application that requires nitrogen gas.

Application

Food and beverage industries
Generators are used to flood the
products with N2 that displaces the oxygen and prolongs the product lifetime significantly because these organisms cannot develop. Furthermore, chemical degradation of food caused by oxidation can be eliminated or stopped.
Petrochemical industries
The primary and very important application of nitrogen in chemical and petrochemical industries is the provision of inert environment aimed at ensuring general industrial safety during cleaning and protection of process vessels.
Petroleum industry
In the petroleum industry, nitrogen is an indispensable component in a number of processes. Most commonly, nitrogen is used to create an inert environment for preventing explosions and for fire safety and to support transportation and transfer of
hydrocarbons.

Metallurgy
The metal industry generally utilizes nitrogen as a means of protecting ferrous and non-ferrous metals during annealing.
Electronics
In electronics, nitrogen serves to displace oxygen in the manufacture of semi-conductors and electric circuits, heat treatment of finished products, as well as in blowing and cleaning.
Fire protection
Nitrogen generators are used in hypoxic air fire prevention systems to produce air with a low oxygen content which will suppress a fire.

Green ammonia
Nitrogen is an important raw material for synthetic green ammonia. It is used to apply green hydrogen to the production of synthetic ammonia to avoid the occurrence of water and gas transformation.
Analytical chemistry
Nitrogen generators are required for various forms of analytical chemistry such as liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and gas chromatography where a stable and continuous supply of nitrogen is necessary.
Paint-and-varnish industry
Paint and varnish production uses nitrogen for the creation of an inert environment in process vessels to ensure safety, as well as for oxygen displacement during packing in order to prevent polymerization of drying oils.

Aircraft & motor vehicle tires
Aircraft tires use nitrogen fill to delay tire rupture on rejected take off events, allowing evacuation time before brake system heat causes an internal tire fire.
Marine
The smallest footprint and lowest energy consumption are found in marine nitrogen generators. There are several applications for nitrogen in the marine environment.
Glass industry
In glass production, nitrogen proves efficient as a cooling agent for electric arc furnace electrodes as well as to displace oxygen during process procedures.
