Titanium dioxide
The chemical composition of rutile mainly includes: TiO2, Ti60%, sometimes containing Fe, Nb, Ta, Cr, Sn, etc.; its name comes from: Rutlle; it comes from the Latin Rutilus, which means red, symbolizing the color of rutile.
Its main characteristics are: its square columnar shape, twin crystals, and color are its identification characteristics; it can be distinguished from cassiterite (cassitoritc); it is insoluble in acids. If sodium carbonate is added to smelt it, it can be dissolved in silicic acid. If it is added Hydrogen peroxide turns the solution yellow.
Because it was formed under high temperature conditions, it is mainly produced in rutile-containing quartz veins and pegmatite veins in metamorphic rock systems. In addition, it appears as an accessory mineral in igneous rocks and is often found in granular form in gneiss; due to its high chemical stability, rutile is often transferred into placer deposits after rock weathering.
