You’ll frequently see medium carbon steels hardened and tempered with heat treatment. High carbon steel is also called “carbon tool steel” and ranges in carbon content from 0.61% to 1.50%.

From there, it is kept at high temperatures and passed through a series of rollers to reach its final size. Steel shrinks slightly as it cools. Because hot-rolled steel is cooled after processing, there is less control over its final shape, making it less suitable for precision applications. Hot rolled steel is commonly used in ships, bridges, pressure vessels, construction, etc.
