| PCD (Diamond Composite) and PCBN (Cubic Boron Nitride Composite) are new types of superhard composite material machining tools developed in the 1970s. PCD and PCBN are superhard composite materials that use a small amount of binder to aggregate fine-grained superhard materials into porous and dense polycrystalline layers under ultra-high pressure and high temperature. At the same time, the two layers of superhard materials and hard alloy are tightly and firmly "combined" and bonded into a whole. In the process of "composite" and bonding, the interchangeability of polycrystalline layer bonding agent elements, superhard material elements (C or N, B, where B has less diffusion), and components in the hard alloy substrate (mainly Co, W has less diffusion) is utilized, resulting in bonding, reaction, "pinning", mechanical inlay, and other effects. In this process, the cold shrinkage coefficients need to be close to each other, the hard alloy needs to undergo secondary liquid-phase sintering, and the elements need to diffuse to create a gradient of suitable composition for each material phase or its component groups. PCD and PCBN cutting tools have high hardness and bending strength, and can withstand certain impact loads. The bending strength of diamond is 210-490MPa, while the bending strength of PCD can reach 1500MPa. They have excellent thermal conductivity and lower friction coefficient, which is beneficial for temperature control in the cutting zone and reducing tool diffusion wear. The hardness of cubic boron nitride is second only to diamond, with high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Its cutting speed is 3-5 times higher than that of hard alloy cutting tools. In addition, cubic boron nitride has extremely strong chemical stability and high thermal stability. In terms of manufacturing, PCD and PCBN cutting tools require multiple processing steps to be completed, including cutting of the substrate, grinding of the tool head, welding, and grinding after welding. At present, PCD and PCBN tools have a basic trend of replacing diamond polycrystalline and cubic boron nitride polycrystalline tools, and are playing an increasingly important role.
