Why do turtles sunbathe?


Because they're reptiles, and all reptiles need to bask in the sun to soak up the heat. That's what gives them energy to move around, to find food, to mate.
Reptiles are known as ectotherms, meaning they depend on their environment for warmth and in order to digest food, keep up their immune system, and all other activities.
When a turtle basks out on a log, you may often see them sticking out their feet. this is because the skin absorbs more of the heat and sun then their shells do.
When they don't get any sun or heat, they are able to slow down their metabolism. Digestion will cease and they're immune system will be weakened. Many reptiles can go for months without eating.
