MoSi2 heating elements: Most STA furnaces are designed for maximum operating temperatures in the 1500-1800 deg C range and for operation in air, so molydisilicide heating elements are used because of their ability to quickly attain and sustain high temperatures and their affinity for oxidizing atmospheres. Despite their robust appearance they are a fragile, glasslike material with low mechanical shock resistance. Basically, the molybdenum core is coated with quartz glass. The elements become nearly liquid as they approach the maximum temperature, and the glass surface reacts with the oxygen in the air atmosphere to form a renewed coating of protective glass on the element surface. The maximum element temperature is always 100 deg C higher than the maximum rated furnace temperature, so for example we use 1800 deg C elements in our 1700 deg C furnaces. Operation in inert atmospheres requires either the use of a higher temperature element (for example 1800 deg C elements for 1600 deg C operation in argon), or a restriction on the maximum furnace operating temperature to accommodate element limitations. Element manufacturers warrant only against manufacturing defects because many variables affect element life. For example, operation in a reducing atmosphere or rapid heating and cooling cycles are hazardous to element health.

The molybdenum disilicide heating elements prevents the inner core from oxidation by forming a compact quartz glass coating at the surface under high temperature. The temperature generated by MoSi2 goes as high as 1700-1830C in oxidation atmosphere. They can be widely used in such applications as sintering and heat treatment on electronic ceramics, structural ceramics, magnetic materials, flameproof materials, glass, metallurgy, etc. The resistance of the heating elements is independent on their mission time. The MoSi2 heating elements hardly age, which allows the mixed use of new and old packages. After long time use in lower temperature around 400-700C, the element will get powderized due to intensified oxidation at this temperature range.

The product includes series 1700 grade, 1800 grade. Packaging is available in U shape, W shape, Straight shape (X shape), bend shape (L shape), Round shape, Spiral shape, M shape. The dimension ranges from 3/6,4/9, 5/10, 6/10, 6/12, 6/14, 7/14, 8/16, 9/18 to 12/24mm.

MoSi2 Heating Elements are manufactured by powder metallurgy. They consist of molybdenum disilicide and additives to prevent recrystallization. Because MoSi2 is completely stable at 1800ºC (3270 ° F), it has a higher temperature performance than other types of heating elements. The resistance of the MoSi2 element to oxidation lies in the formation of impermeable quartz or glass-like protective layer, which will be re-formed upon heating if it is damaged during operation.

MoSi2 devices have low resistivity and have positive resistance-temperature characteristics. Compared to metal heating elements, it can be used under very high watt loads. Due to its high-temperature oxidation resistance, MoSi2 resistors remain constant at a constant temperature throughout their useful life. Even in series, new and old components can be used simultaneously in the same furnace.
