Benzoic acid is scaly or needle shaped, with the smell of benzene or formaldehyde, flammable. The relative density is 1.2659. The melting point is 122.4ºC, the boiling point is 249ºC, and the refractive index is 1.504. Vapors are volatile. Flash point (close cup) 121-123ºC. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, methanol, ethyl ether, chloroform, benzene, toluene, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and turpentine. It sublimated rapidly at 100 degrees and evaporated at the same time as steam.Benzoic acid is widely found in nature in the form of free acids, esters or their derivatives.
