Wood properties
Honduran mahogany has long been a favorite because of its ease of workability, beauty and excellent stability. It is an extremely important commercial timber in Latin America and is now widely grown in plantations.
Despite export restrictions, Honduran mahogany is available as lumber or veneer, preferably from plantation forests. (However, due to CITES restrictions, most U.S. retailers are unable to ship the wood to international markets.) Prices are in the mid-range of imported hardwoods, but the wood tends to be more expensive than African mahogany (Khaya spp.). Sawn or quartersawn lumber is also more expensive.
The heartwood varies greatly in color, from light pinkish brown to dark reddish brown. The color darkens with age. Mahogany also exhibits an optical phenomenon known as the cat's eye effect.
Common uses: furniture, cabinetry, turned pieces, veneer, musical instruments, boat building and carving.
