FLAVANGENOL

In 16^th century, French Jacques Cartier’s expedition was saved from annihilation due to scurvy by tea made from pine bark and leaves. The polyphenols in the bark are thought to have improved their vitamin C deficiency. In the Landes region, located in the south western region of France, the vast forests of pine trees exist. The material extracted from the bark of French maritime pine is called “FLAVANGENOL”. “FLAVANGENOL” contains polyphenols called procyanidins which have attracted attention as a material expected to have various health benefits due to its antioxidant effect (The antioxidant power is approximately 600 times greater than Vitamin C).

 

 

Pine Bark, abundant with Polyphenols

Procyanidins, contained in “FLAVANGENOL” constitute a category of polyphenols found in pine bark. The thickness of the bark of the maritime pine in south western France is more than twice that of Japanese pine bark. TOYO SHINYAKU had established a manufacturing process of “FLANVANGENOL” made from French maritime pine bark.

Flavangenol, one of several pine bark extract products, is expected to prevent metabolic diseases with its potent antioxidant effect, its anti-obesity effect and its improvement of insulin sensitivity. In this study, targeting the liver as one of the organs that plays an important role in energy metabolism, Flavangenol was investigated for its effect on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), its action mechanism and its active ingredients, using in vivo and in vitro experiment systems.

The clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of “FLAVANGENOL” on serum LDL cholesterol levels. Adult males and females with total cholesterol levels >=200mg/dL were enrolled. The subjects were divided into three groups and ingested either food containing “FLAVANGENOL” 40mg, or food containing “FLAVANGENOL” 80mg, or placebo food for 12 weeks. 37 subjects, whose serum LDL-cholesterol levels were less than 140mg/dL were analyzed.

 

The LDL cholesterol levels of the “FLAVANGENOL” 80mg group significantly decreased compared to the placebo group
