[ What is Lactoferrin ]
Lactoferrin LF is the core immune protein in breast milk which offers direct antibacterial activity, and plays a role in activating and regulating the immune system. It offers antibacterial and antiviral activity, and promotes iron absorption, helping to maintain bacterial balance in the intestines and protect the gastrointestinal tract.
[ Why we need lactoferrin ]
Researches show that newborn babies rarely get sick within 6 months, because they carry lactoferrin, iron and other trace elements from maternal body, which help enhancing their autoimmunity. But over time, the lactoferrin and iron in breast milk is getting less and less. The infants are immune to getting sick for lower level of immunity. Those non-breastfeeding, mixed-feeding babies, especially need to supplement lactoferrin.
[ Major functions of the lactoferrin ]
1. Immunomodulatory mechanism: Enhancing immune function by regulating multiple immune cells, innate immunity and response immunity.
2. Antibacterial mechanism: The combination of lactoferrin and iron competitively takes away the iron necessary for bacterial and inhibit bacterial growth, or destroy bacterial cell membranes to kill bacteria.
3. Antiviral mechanism: Lactoferrin competitively combines itself with cell membrane or directly with viral particles (such as hepatitis viruses), thereby blocking the entry of viruses into cells. Lactoferrin can also inhibit intracellular replication of the virus. By enhancing the natural immune system to phagocytose and inactivate virus particles, it plays an important role in preventing and alleviating viral infections.
4. Antifungal mechanism: Lactoferrin can disrupt the cell wall of Candida albicans and bind itself to the cell membrane for antifungal function. Researches showed that the combination of lactoferrin and chlordiazol can kill drug-resistant Candida.
5. Iron deficiency anemia treatment: Lactoferrin has a 300-fold higher affinity for iron than that of transferrin, and lactoferrin can efficiently promote iron absorption. Clinical trials have shown that the absorption rate of iron when combined with lactoferrin is four times that of simple iron supplementation.
