If you are using the GoPro camera for extended periods, it is better to power the camera with a battery eliminator instead of connecting it to a charger.

 

 

The battery eliminator snaps into the battery slot of all GoProHero 3 models and latches like the GoPro lid for a secure fit.
Using a battery eliminator eliminates two sources of heat. The charging circuit in the camera and the battery itself, which gets warm while charging.

Less heat makes the camera more reliable. Overheating can cause unexpected shut-down of the camera.

A battery eliminator also bypasses the problems that some users have had with the GoPro charging logic causing the camera to freeze and require a reset.

 

The Battery Eliminator includes a 1.1 amp AC adapter (100-240 VAC input) and a coupler the size of the standard AHDBT-301 battery used in all GoPro Hero 3 models. The coupler cable is 10 inches (254mm) long. The adapter output cable is 4'10" (147 cm) long.

Is the Battery Eliminator compatible with the Hero 2?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. The DC coupler (the "fake" battery) will fit in the battery compartment of the Hero 2. However, the + and - terminals of the Hero 2 are reversed from the Hero 3. Using the battery eliminator with the Hero 2 will DESTROY THE CAMERA. Even before you turn the camera on.

Can I connect my camera to a computer using the USB port while the battery eliminator is connected?

Yes, you can download from the camera SD card while it is operating on the battery eliminator. The battery eliminator will work just like a regular battery that is fully charged. The camera will not attempt to charge it from the computer.

 

 

 

Can I make the camera take photos or record video automatically when power is applied?

In order to start recording when power is applied, it is necessary to start the camera. The TL-003 controller has an automatic start mode specifically designed for this purpose. When power is applied, the controller waits a few seconds, then virtually presses the power button on the camera to start it. For Hero 3 White cameras, they can start in One Button Mode. Hero 3 Black cameras can run a Super One Button Mode script which can take photos and or video before turning the camera off.

Can I power the dummy battery from a 12 volt source? 24 volts? 5 volts?

The dummy battery operates on 4.3 volts at 1.5 amps, slightly more than a fully charged Lithium Ion battery. A voltage regulator is necessary to use other input voltages. We are developing a finished product which can be used for operation from other voltages.
