What is "Juice" in Japan?

In Japan, the word "juice" is used as a general term to refer to a wide variety of drinks, including not only fruit juices but also sweet, carbonated drinks (regardless of actual fruit juice content). Officially, however, with the JAS Law (law concerning the standardization and proper labeling of agricultural and forestry products) of 1967, it became illegal to sell any product labeled as "juice" that is not 100% fruit juice. Drinks which contain juice but are not 100% juice are labeled as "drinks containing fruit juice".

 

What is "Organic Produce" in Japan?

According to the "Japanese Agricultural Standard for Organic Plants," "Organic" is defined in the following way.

Organic Produce

1) Organic Produce: Produce grown in fields in which no chemical fertilizers or other agrochemicals have been used for at least three years.

2) Organic in Transition: No chemicals have been used for a period of between six months and three years.
