Tochigi Leather
Leather, perhaps man's first crafted material, finds its origins in daily necessities like clothing, footwear, rugs, and roof coverings, eventually evolving into a recording device like paper or bill-keeping. Eventually, around the mid-nineteenth century, the technique of hide tanning was perfected and industrialized, marking the greatest advancement in leather since its inception. The physical nature of leather has allowed it to maintain an unwavering position as the ideal everyday construction material for the last two hundred years.
So-called "Tochigi leather" is a vegetable-tanned leather, also known as nume leather. It's made using tannin extracted from acacia trees grown in South America, which is carefully added in a pit tank during the tanning process. The leather which results from this technique boasts a unique texture, as well as superior durability and water resistance. Further, the process ensures that the quality and texture will only improve as the leather ages.
"CLASSICO"
This leather has been carefully vegetable-tanned, leading to a more subtle luster. The leather's "silver" surface (the surface on which hair once grew) is utilized without additional processing, which is extremely rare. Only the highest quality leather, without any scratches or blemishes, can be used for this process.
"VACHETTA"
The Vachetta shrink leather is a bespoke material which features a matte texture. As the leather ages along with its owner, it will transform into an even richer, warmer leather. In other words, it doesn't peak at first use, but grows even better with use. The vegetable-tanning process is extremely time-intensive, which makes this type of leather exceedingly rare.
Processes
①Soaking the hides
Raw cowhide is imported from all over the world, but primarily from North America. The skins are soaked to remove salt and blemishes from the surface, and to add some moisture back to the leather.
②Hide Separation
The hide is cut along the backbone to separate it into the left and right halves.
③Liming
The skins are soaked in a lime solution, which dissolves unnecessary fats, relaxes collagen fibers, and eases the process of removing the hair. This process also increases the leather's volume and increases its alkalinity.
④Fleshing
A machine is used on the skin's surface to remove any remaining fatty tissues.
⑤Deliming
This step removes any remaining lime elements, neutralizes and smooths the skin, and prepares the leather for the rest of the process.
⑥The Tannin Tank
The hide is soaked in pits filled with a plant tannin solution. The process begins with a relatively weak solution, gradually moving through stronger and stronger solutions. The hide will make its way through no less than 160 tanks!
⑦Washing and Drying
The hide is washed to remove excess tannin sap, then thoroughly dried using what's called a summing machine.
⑧Adding the Fat
A small amount of fat is added back into the leather to increase its softness and luster.
⑨Setting
The leather is set using a #12 setter.
⑩Drying
The leather is naturally air-dried for roughly ten days.
⑪Skiving
"Skiving" refers to the process of adjusting the thickness of the leather. This is determined based on the leather's intended use: Bag, belt, etc.
⑫Retanning and Dyeing
The leather's softness and tanning condition may be further modified depending on its intended use. The leather may also be dyed at this stage.
⑬Setting
The leather may be set again using a #1 setter, and any excess moisture is also removed from the material at this stage.
⑭Hand-Setting
Particularly thick leather which is difficult to extend by machine is hand-set by skilled artisans.
⑮Drying
The leather may have gained some moisture by this stage, so the leather is again carefully hung for drying (thinner leather for up to four days, thicker leather for up to one week).
⑯Vibration
The leather is put through a vibration process to enhance its softness.
⑰Painting
The leather may be painted in order to enhance the material's existing natural beauty and luster. This also adds to the leather's durability.
⑱Finishing
The final step involves a spray and polish technique. The leather may also be embossed with various patterns or logos, and an iron may be used to increase the leather's shine.
⑲Measuring
Each piece of leather is measured using a photoelectric measurement machine.
⑳Packaging and Shipment
The leather is carefully and expertly packed to preserve its quality before being shipped to its next destination.
